Great toy expect for the wings - Sep 29, 2010
My son recieved Buzz for his birthday and he loves it. All the other reviews go over the specifics so I will not repeat them. There is only one flaw with this toy, his wings. Before all the kids had left the birthday party his right wing was broke. It is easy to fix, but I find myself fixing the wings every time my son plays with Buzz. The wings pop right back in after you take off his pack.
Overall we love Buzz and would recommand him to others.
Talking Buzz Lightyear - Sep 18, 2010
We gave "Talking Buzz" to our Grandson for his 4th birthday. He absolutely loves it! He wanted a Buzz with wings and one that talks. This Buzz has everything! It is quite durable for a plastic toy as it has been dropped many times, and although the wing may malfunction for a short time, it is easily fixed. It is a true replica of the movie, and we are glad we purchased it.
Is Your Child Ready for This Buzz? - Sep 15, 2010
After reading a lot of negative reviews centering around durability issues with Buzz Lightyear action figures, I was a little nervous about choosing this for our 4 year old's birthday present. We were not terribly price sensitive when choosing this model except not wanting to spend a lot of money for a toy that wouldn't last. Perhaps earlier / cheaper Buzz Lightyears were less well made, but I found this one to be pretty durable considering how sophisticated an electronic toy it is.
When he got it, I sat down with my son and showed him how to play with it, how to hold it (by the torso not the limbs or wings) and most importantly what NOT to do (throw it or crash it the way he does with his smaller / cheaper Buzz Lightyear toys).
After a few months, all is well. When it fell from a table to the patio a wing popped off, but was easily reattached with no permanent affects (they apparently are made to come off fairly easily for safety reasons).
In sum, if you think your child can follow directions and understand some toys need to be handled in certain ways, he or she will REALLY get a kick out of this toy. If not, perhaps another version would be better.
you can't have it in front of you and dont play with him - Sep 11, 2010
i am a colombian toy story fan, when i knew of the toy story collection, i say "i gotta have that buzz" i think the woody was a little too expensive and too much interaction, but buzz it suppose to do all of these stuff.
his helmet opens, his laser works as it suppose to, his wings open with the red round button and the little light bulbs shines, he's got his own sounds effects, he's fully poseable, he glows in the dark, he talks when you're talking to him, and he even talks when you're not talking to him, HE'S GOT EVERYTHING!!
i took him to work to make the office pretty, and everyone in there just want to grab him and play with him, even the older ones, its just too playable, even it works as a substitution for human companion, i just love when he says "how are you today?" and "we might say we'll be friends to infinity and beyond" i put him every night by my night stand when i go to sleep just to see his green trim glow in the dark, one bad thing though he spends a lot of batteries! but he has to for all the things he does!
there's a little gallerie of pictures i made with him

My two sons just LOVE LOVE their BUZZ!!! - Aug 11, 2010
I have two sons, one is almost 4 and a 1 1/2 years old. They are learning to take turns to play with their Buzz Lightyear. We have other characters like Woody and Jessie however Buzz is the most played one. His wings popped out couple times but I could easily pushed them back on. The toy is very durable I'd say. It still looks and functions as new even after played by two toddlers everyday for four months! I am so happy with my purchase!
Good toy, but expensive - Aug 07, 2010
It's a great toy, nice and very interactive features. Nice finish and fair voice quality. It's really very posable. The box is not that good. Very thin and easy to deform. The wins mechanism is fragile and quite easy to damage, specially if you consider this is a toy for children 3 and up. For the price, you can expect better and more durable materials.
Wow, the best Buzz Ever!!! - Jul 19, 2010
My son is almost 5 years old and just loves this toy, he plays with it constantly, he's had it for almost a year. Some reviewers are right that the toy is too heavy to stand up, but that doesn't bother my son, he props him up, or just carries or flies him around. What surprises me is how durable it is, Buzz has been dropped countless times, the wings fall off but are easy to put back together, the same with the helmet. And this weekend one of the arm pieces fell off, I thought for sure it was broken, but it too easily popped back into place! I have to say this toy was well designed. Other than some scrathes and stickers falling off, it's in great shape, thanks for a great toy, I would definitely recommend it!
Great toy - Jul 01, 2010
We got this for my 6 year old son for his birthday, he loves it! The interactive features are great.
The Buzz Lightyear action figure I wanted as a kid! - Jun 27, 2010
When Toy Story first hit theaters, every kid wanted the toys Andy played with in the film. But the one toy of them all that was the most appealing to kids was Buzz Lightyear. The pop-out wings, light-up wrist laser, and push-button sound effects made him the must-have toy. For Christmas, I wrote a letter to my grandmother so she'd get me a Buzz Lightyear for Christmas. However, she didn't know who or what Buzz Lightyear was, so she couldn't get me one. Not that they'd be easy to find, since they were on level with Tickle Me Elmo in demand. This was also just before the internet made everything available right at your fingertips.
So when I grew up and Thinkway made these Toy Story Collection Buzz Lightyear action figures, I had to get one. It has just about every feature the toy in the movies has. The flip-open helmet, pop-out wings with green and red lights on the tips, glow-in-the-dark green trim (which needs to be "charged" with sunlight first), wrist communication panel that can be opened and closed, and voice and sound effects from the movies are all here. You can even activate different "modes" - Toy Mode and Space Ranger Mode, and Buzz will even move his head and respond to you when you speak to him! The only feature that seems to be missing is the Karate Chop action, but it's understandable that this feature wasn't included due to the overabundance of other features the toy already has. The figure is also well articulated, even down to the individual fingers. And to top it off, it even comes in a box similar to the one the film's toy did, complete with cardboard wings.
There's actually a new version of this figure, which includes the Anti-Gravity Belt used by the other Buzz Lightyear figure in Toy Story 2, However, this one does not come with the belt. I prefer the original figure lacking the belt, since the beltless one appears in all three movies while the one with the belt only appears in Toy Story 2.
Owning yhis toy is a dream come true of mine, and I'm glad to finally have it after all these years. Of course, I had to get a Woody doll to complement it. To infinity and beyond!
The Buzz Lightyear I always wanted - Jun 21, 2010
I remember when I was 11 years old and saw Toy Story in theaters. Not only did I instantly choose my future profession, I also instantly wanted my own Woody and Buzz. Even back in 1995/96, I always had a beef with how inaccurate those two toys were in looks and design (in the Woody doll it was always his face and the fact the stitching on the shoulders and where the legs connect with his waist were inaccurate with a voice that didn't sound like Tom Hanks' voice and in Buzz it was always lack of features and crappy wingspan).
When I caught wind of the movie-accurate versions, my inner-child annoyed me to the point where I HAD to have these toys. Once I got a hold of this new and improved Buzz Lightyear action figure, I was in love with it and was rejoicing. It was the Buzz I always wanted to have (he even came in a replica of his spaceship box!).
This toy is surprisingly more pose-able than past incarnations of this beloved character. And the ugly screws that usually littered the backside of almost every Buzz toy I have ever seen are no longer there. What really tickled me was the fact that his waist is rubber...RUBBER. Not only is it accurate, but it allows for him to be THAT much more flexible in positioning him. This does make him a bit wobbly, but still quite stable. I should also note that while his individual fingers (excluding the thumbs), arms, waist, and upper legs turn smoothly, his knees (bending and rotating), feet, and waist (when bending forward, backward, or to the side) are stiff and click into place. This may seem annoying to some, but highly welcome and understandable. This toy is quite hefty and top-heavy, so the stiff, clicking limbs allow for better balance if you like him to stand on his own. And while his pop-out wings are still not completely movie length or helmet fully retracts, this are more real world limitations than flaws. And the decal designs are stickers, but if you're a collector this shouldn't be an issue, but excessive play can make these fall off over time.
As for features, this guy is full of them! This guy spouts about 65 sayings overall. He has two basic modes: Toy and Space Ranger. In Toy Mode Buzz recites lines similar or verbatim as if he were the real toy from Andy's room (about 6 or 7 in all). While in this mode he has the light's on his wings flashing AND his wings unfold correctly (another thing I love about this thing) and the helmet makes the sound it does from the films when you open or close it (by hand, but the blue buttons on either side of the helmet). The deployment and retracting sounds of the wings are also present. He has his open-up wrist communicator (which also has sounds)...and of course...he has his laser and his green trim glows in the dark (once you expose him to a light source, of course). His Space Ranger Mode has the majority of the 65 sayings and boost a huge amount of interactivity. Anything you can do with him gets a response from Buzz. He responds to your voice with random sayings, he can tell if you aren't speaking or are too loud, he responds to you opening and closing his helmet, pressing his laser, opening his communicator, and when you get his wings out he plays flying sounds when you put him in a horizontal "flying" position and will make landing sounds when you turn him upright again. The best part for both parents and collectors is that you can disable his talkback feature while he's still on and leave him in Toy Mode to use his movie features so he isn't constantly responding to random noises (and possibly less irritation to parents, however turning the feature back on is easy so your kids will most likely figure it out on their own anyway). His head also turns whenever he speaks. This can also be positioned by hand, but it's best not to do it too often or you can risk damage (but don't be afraid to move it).
Overall, I recommend this toy for both kids and adults, though I also recommend that due to the price tag on this thing that the child should be roughly 8-10 so they won't damage this toy too much (if the child is younger, I suggest one of the many cheaper Buzz Lightyear toys available that may not have all the features...but is just as accurate in appearance, slightly more durable, and cheaper to boot. And due to his hard plastic body this toy can sustain noticeable damage if dropped (or be completely destroyed). But definitely the best 50 bucks I ever spent on a toy (not to mention it's almost a steal to me since these toys specifically have a strong meaning to me).
SPECIAL NOTE TO PARENTS: It is rather easy for an older child to manipulate Buzz's fingers into the unmistakable "middle finger salute". Just letting you guys know.
Warning: If you have a kid hard on toys get the cheaper one! - Jun 10, 2010
This is a deluxe Buzz model. In my opinion it really should be bought for older kids and/or collectors. Any parent knows the more electronic stuff and doodad's a toy has the more probability it might break (or at least that is the way it has always been for me). This is an expensive toy as well.
My son's 10 and has been asking for this toy for some time. At his age, where he knows how to play carefully with toys, I was fine with him using his allowance (of course we chipped in!) to purchase this version of Buzz. It does all sorts of things and, in general, is a blast to play with.
However, if I had a 2-8 year old who still tended to drop toys, bang on them, throw them around, drag them everywhere, and so on I would choose this toy instead Disney Ultimate Buzz Lightyear Talking Action Figure -- 12" or Disney / Pixar TS Blast-Off Buzz Lightyear TV Item. That was always my policy when my kids were little and it served me pretty well--cheaper versions only.
So far it is a solid toy. I would recommend for ages 10 and up only or for kids who are ultra careful with thier toys.
Very good! - May 21, 2010
My 11 years old kid became very glad with that toy, and me too. Very recommended for all the fans. Good material in terms of quality, nice effects e and features. Sometimes seems to be a bit buggy and need some reset (power on/off), but is very good product.
"Hey Guys...he thinks he's the REAL Buzz Lightyear" - Feb 20, 2010
For real though. This toy thinks he's the REAL Buzz Lightyear. He is a dead-on replica from the movie. The one and only thing that he didn't do that he had in the movie was the karate chop action (probably because they couldn't fit the mechanical parts in along with the wiring). His laser shoots out, his helmet pops open, his wings pop out from the mere push of a button. He has all of the original sayings from the "toy" version of Buzz in the movie and then 60-some sayings from "alive" Buzz. One of the coolest features, is when you play with some of his features, he makes a comment about what you are doing to him. Examples: When you open or close his helmet, he comments about you opening and closing his helmet. When you turn him horizontal, he makes a bunch of flying noises. And when you open his wrist communicator, he talks into it. Really cool little features that I think most other versions of Buzz have never pulled off before. Much like many other reviewers have said, his stickers and paint job are done cheaply....but very true to the movie. His stickers are done just like the movie...his paint job is done just like the movie. But if you are using him as a collectors piece and not an actual toy, I think you'll find you don't have to worry about it that much. Another cool feature, when you turn on his interactive mode, he'll sit there and chat away with Woody and Rex all day long. They don't even care if you (a human) are in the room.
Very quality toy...and out of all of the "Toy Story Collection" toys from Thinkway, I think he's the MOST accurate, and the most worth the money that he's retailed at. All of the other 5 are overpriced. Buzz, you actually get what you pay for.
Another cool fact. I e-mailed Thinkway Toys and they are releasing some new toys around the release of the new movie. They didn't tell me who they are releasing, but I can always assume. So in only a few months you'll be able to add Jesse, Bullseye, Prospector, and Zurg (that's what I'm hoping for anyways) to the gang and have a more complete collectors set. One more side note. It's not made by Thinkway, but I'm assuming that's due to copyright laws...but there is a REALLY accurate Mr. Potato Head that I saw at Fred Meyer. His scale to the movie is pretty accurate when put with the Thinkway toys. It's made by Playschool. I'd recommend him to add to your collection.
Thanks
Great Toy - Feb 08, 2010
This fulfilled a three year olds "Toy Story" wish. We watched the movie everyday for months. It works just like the toy in the movie. I was very pleased with the quality and the purchase went very smooth.
Fun but poorly constructed - Jan 28, 2010
I ordered this for my 3 year old son for Christmas. I had to send it back twice because the wings did not function properly. Amazon Customer Service was great!!! Finally, the third Buzz functioned properly. However, even though my son has been gentle with Buzz, his helmet, back pack and wing all came apart. At least I was able to snap it back together. Fun toy but not durable in the least.
Buzz IS a cool toy! - Jan 18, 2010
My 3 year old got the Toy Story Collection Buzz and Woody for Christmas. Woody is fun, but Buzz is far superior. My husband and I have had so much fun playing with Buzz, and my 11 month old is in love with him. I don't think there will be another Buzz as cool as this one, and if you're in the market for a Buzz Lightyear, I can't recommend this version enough.
I don't know if we have the Talkback mode completely figured out yet, but it's a lot of fun. His helmet makes sounds when you open and close it. He shoots his laser. He responds to your voice-- if it's too loud, he'll tell you to quiet down (which is HILARIOUS when my 11 month old was screaming while holding on to him). I never get tired of opening his wings and having him fly-- if you tilt him horizontally and zoom him around, he'll make flying noises. It's so much fun! Another really neat feature is that all of his fingers move-- I was surprised about that!
We have had to fix Buzz a couple times. Once, his front helmet piece fell off, and luckily I was able to put it back on without cracking it. His wings can easily become dislodged, but so far I've been able to fix that, too. I don't know how much rough play Buzz can handle before something breaks for good, but we'll try to be careful.
buzz lightyear - Jan 07, 2010
My grandson who is 4 yrs old loves this toy. He play acts a lot with it, but he dropped it and one of the wings will not flip up anymore.
Ultimate Buzz for fans - Jan 05, 2010
He's awesome! He is exactly as advertised in the description. My son is a HUGE Buzz fan and we wanted to get him one that was more interactive and this one definitely is. The blue, green and red buttons on his chest activate different modes. Buzz knows when he is flying, standing, lying on his back or when you open or close his helmet. Quite entertaining for all. He is the most like the movie buzz that I've ever seen. He is the ultimate Buzz for fans.
Only good for show, shouldn't be played with. - Dec 27, 2009
Two days after he received it on Christmas, my 4 year old broke the hand off of his Buzz Lightyear. He was in the car in his car seat happily playing away when suddenly tears and tears. Apparently the hand came off when he was playing, it just snapped off! I am really dissapointed that an expensive toy cannot survive everyday wear and tear. I would understand if it was being banged up but he was quietly playing with it. Two thumbs down for this toy!!!!!
Best Buzz Ever...but room for improvement! - Dec 25, 2009
Functionally, this Buzz lacks only karate chop action (which I believe is currently technologically impossible to have along with the laser and so they opt, reasonably, to put in the laser); he talks, his head moves, he responds to you (though not with understanding, just simple voice activation), he has the right wings that light up, makes flight noises when held horizontally, has the laser, the wrist communicator, the helmet, all with appropriate sound effects. He's more flexible than previous Buzzes, though the clicks can be alarming! The wings have a handy break away feature, although they seem a tad sensitive and I imagine a lot of parents will be fixing the wings OFTEN.
Further on the down side, the paint on the wings is VERY easily damaged and all the labels are stickers; after one day of VERY respectful use, there's at least one scratch on the wings and the "Lightyear" sticker is frayed at the edges. At the least, they should make replacement stickers available to people; for the cost, they really should have been painted on, and I have no idea why they didn't do that.
Still, as of 2009, at least, this is BY FAR the best Buzz ever made and well worth the extra money for all the additional features.
Update: My husband felt my durability rating was harsh, but I'm glad I selected it because now the communicator cover has broken off under normal play and I can't fix it; it appears a small tube (like on watch bands) fell out and is missing.
The best buzz ever made - Dec 25, 2009
We all know who Buzz Lightyear is, the iconic Pixar super hero that is a toy, well this buzz lets you have the same toy that Andy had in the "Toy Story" movies. This Buzz is very accurate to the figure in the movie. It stands 12" tall and has a lot of articulation, even the fingers move independently. The arms have ball joints to alow human like movement and the knees use ratchets so they can move but still hold buzz up. He has 2 voice modes. The red button on his chest makes him talk like a toy with phrases from the movie. The blue button then lets him talk in his clear, Tim Allen voice. In this mode his head will move and he will "talk" with you. His sound sensors pick up your voice and he will respond with his voice and head movement. He also picks up the tone of your voice and if you talk to loud he will panic or ask you to talk quietly. He has sensors in his helmet and wrist communicator so he knows what position they are in and will respond to them. He even has his flashing laser on his arm. The most impressive thing is his wings, he actually has film accurate wings that are the correct size and pop out the same way they do in the movie with the flashing lights. He even has motion sensors so he knows when he is "flying". A very cool toy from "Thinkway Toys" and an essential to any toy story fan or collector.
Mint Condition Box ! - Dec 13, 2009
This toy came in Mint Condition, NO dents, and NO scratches on the box. Overall, this is the perfect Buzz and it's been the only buzz that looks like the movie since 1995.
This is perfect for all kids, and all toystory fans :)
You cannot find it in Mint Condition in ToysRUS or at Target (I Tried)
I was surprised how excellent was the box.
Great Design, needs better quality control - Dec 01, 2009
The toy itself is a nice piece of work, but upon opening the first one I was VERY dissapointed by the lack of quality control seen. Paint was running, gouges in the helmet plastic, chips on the feet and rocket pack. Even a piece of the wing broke off when I first deployed them. Frustrated I emailed Thinkway Toys, to which they had me send in original recept for the purchase and within a week they sent me a brand new buzz, fully inspected with no defects that I could find. Overall I would say its an awesome toy, but if you find its quality lackluster, dont be afraid to call Thinkway on their problems, for $50+ bucks this should be almost perfect.
To sisappointment and below... - Nov 29, 2009
Please note that I did not buy this item from Amazon.com, because they do not ship to my country(outside of U.S. Continent) why-so-ever.
Ttherefore I bought Buzz directly from [...].
Pros:
-Big, tall.
-Exact same outlooking based on 'real' Toy Story computer data.
-Packed with 'Space Ranger spaceship' as shown on the movie.
Cons:
-All of marks(e.g., 'Laser' on his right arm and 'Danger' on his rocket backpack) are made of cheep paper-sticker.
(so they won't last longer than a month for sure)
-Foldable Wings are not so firlmy made, especially the cover('Rocket backpack.
-Red & white stripe paintings on Buzz's wing tips are easily erased.
-Buzz cannot fold his arms close to ribs(maybe he's too muscular?)
-As of the movie, the spaceship is just made of paper.
Well, it's too close to the one starred in the movie. Although it was 'made in Taiwan' as in Toy Story I,
it's from China. Yet it's one of 'Official collection' authorized by Pixar.
I have numbers of 'Cars' toys for my kids, and I definitely see the difference on quality from one to the other.
All of toys are from China nowadays, yet the ones that quality controlled by Japanese toy companies(like TakaraTomy) are much better than any.
(and of course this one is not)
Overall, I spent more than $120 for this including import tax and shipping & handling.
It's too below the price. In real, Andy would have been disappointed I believe.
Buzz Lightyear - YES! - Nov 26, 2009
Buzz Lightyear, Space Ranger! Is he real or just a toy - you decide! I'm pretty sure you know who Buzz Lightyear is but if not he's a space ranger who's a toy, or a toy who's a space ranger... Just watch a Toy Story Movie already! This is the Toy Story Collection Buzz Lightyear and just... Wow.
For kids and adults:
You may look at the price tag and think, "Wow, that's expensive for a Buzz Lightyear," and certainly there are less expensive versions but this is THE Buzz to own whether you are a player (with toys) or a collector. First of all the box... I'm not a keep in the box kind of guy and usually just chunk `em but this box is an exacting (aside from some real world concessions) replica of the boxes Buzz comes in in the movies. Smartly the wings are not attached in the store (imagine the carnage) but are included so you can attach at home for display or when giving to that Pixar loving kid on Christmas day. A very nice box for a mass market toy.
This guy is a huge and bulky 12" figure and is impeccably sculpted to match the movie. From the bottom of his feet, pointed knees, rubbery waist up to his cocky face with arched eyebrow this guy is Buzz from head to toe. His backpack and wings are also picture perfect.
Paint is fairly simple but all clean. The work on his face, eyes, eyebrows, mouth... all look great and clean. The only slop at all is the around the edges of the purple tips on his fingers and the green patches on his hands. And speaking of the green - IT'S GLOW IN THE DARK! He has a clean green color used to highlight many parts of his body, the biggest area being his chest, but you wouldn't even know it glows until you get him in the dark it's such a normal looking paint. One downside is that some details, like warnings on his jetpack and his communicator and space ranger symbol, are stickers. It looks fine and is movie accurate but as stickers do they will peel over time and play.
Articulation is all high quality. The head is part of the features but can be moved when he's not on but I would not recommend excessive tampering with it. Ball shoulders and elbows offer smooth and stable positioning, the wrists turn and the four fingers on each hand move at the hand knuckle. The only down side to the arms is they cannot hang straight down from the shoulder - but they look so good with hand on hips or in a more action pose it's hardly missed. His waist is clicky with a couple of clicks to lean him front and back and side to side that add a lot of pose-ability. His hip joints have a full and smooth range of movement (forward, back and out), the knees are clicky and also rotate (clicky too) and the ankles have a small range. It may not sound like a lot but it really is perfect for this toy and more than you might expect and the quality of the joints is top notch. There's a little wobble but nothing a steady hand can't manage.
Special features? This guy is ALL special features. In toy mode he has a few phrases to say and standard wing pop and fold and helmet open and close and laser sounds. Also his voice and sounds are of a more tinny and old fashioned quality. But in Space Ranger mode he's much more interactive - or that is to say he has a lot more to say. His head turns side to side and as the box says, over 65 phrases, and add that to the lights (arm laser and wing tips) and sounds. His wings pop out at the push of a button and make appropriate noises both popping out and folding in and they do both well. The helmet opens and closes and makes noises and dialog (depending on mode) as appropriate. His laser lights up and makes movie accurate sound and his communicator opens and closes with appropriate sounds and dialog as well. Add on to that with wings out you can fly him in a horizontal fashion for swooping and swooshing sounds and when you make him vertical again he makes landing sounds and appropriate dialog you've got a feast of special features. Oh, did I mention he has a microphone and listens out for you as well and responds to noises you make? If you stay quiet he'll ask where you are and eventually enter "hypersleep" mode. The only possible downside is that, yes, some of the sounds and dialog are sequential, but there are so many and they are subject to several factors that it's hardly a bother.
A couple of things in leaving. One, for the price this guy does a lot. Compare to a leader class Transformer that may have 3 sounds and the only other advantage is transformation (but Buzz does have pop out wings and open and closeable helmet and communicator and glow in the dark paint) and the tiny bit more money translates to a lot of extra features. Two, this is such a collector toy that it comes with that great box and an actual certificate of authenticity while at the same time being economical and fun enough to be a great toy for kids too. And last, the box does not lie... I've easily cataloged 64 different sayings that Buzz says and I'm sure I either missed some or they counted some in different circumstances but he really does say a lot and makes many sounds and has lights and all. Because I know many would prefer the sayings to be a surprise I won't list here, but the first (maybe only) comment here will be me publishing all the sayings I've found (because some will want to know) so consider that a spoiler warning on the comments section. Oh and um, 5 out of 5, OK?
